Next week marks the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, and to celebrate Shenzhen is going all out. The light show at the Civic Centre has had a revamp and now has additional special effects to celebrate the National Day holiday.
Every building around the Civic Centre, Futian, is lit up with a multitude of colours, patterns and images for about 20 minutes. To add to the ambience the light show is accompanied by uplifting music, including the songs ‘I love you China’ and ‘Me and my country’. It begins with the buildings being lit up in red with gold stars and Chinese writing to emulate the Chinese flag. The buildings go dark momentarily then a countdown begins, and the buildings explode with light and colour, as if there are fireworks right in front of you. Flames, seascapes with schools of tropical fish, rivers of colour, and beams of light from the very top of the Ping An Finance Centre are just a few of the stunning sights you will see in the middle of the Futian CBD.

Each time you think the show has finished and they can’t possibly have thought of anything more impressive, it’s as if a new show begins, even brighter and more colourful than the one before. There are many light shows in cities around the world; however, with this National Day special Shenzhen has surpassed them all.

From 20th September to 15th October you can watch the light fantastic in the centre of the city three times every evening – at 19:30, 20:30 and 21:00. The best places to see the spectacular show are right in the centre of the Civic Centre plaza, where you will be surrounded by light and colour, or Lianhua Shan Park. If you go a little early and don’t mind putting in some effort, climb up to Deng Xiao Ping’s statue for the best view of the whole area.
There is no better way to celebrate the 70th birthday of the People’s Republic of China than to see Shenzhen’s unmissable light spectacular.
