Dapeng Peninsula Geopark

Among the first facilities to open is a geology museum that spans more than 8,000 square meters and offers instructional exhibits using multimedia technology. The museum is home to more than 500 exhibits, including precious minerals and fossils.

The museum is open between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday.

The park covers nearly 51 square kilometers and 67.8 kilometers of coastline. It features volcanic rocks that formed after two eruptions 135 million years ago and coastal landforms that formed between 20,000 and 10,000 years ago.

Two hiking paths, also known as “geological relic survey routes,” have been built in the park.

One of the paths is 3.3 kilometers long and leads to the main peak of Qi’niang Mountain, which is the second-tallest mountain in Shenzhen, after Wutong Mountain. Hikers can see volcanic rocks and rare plants along the path.

The other hiking path is about 6 kilometers long and stretches from Yangmeikeng in the west to Luzui in the east. Highlights of that path include coastal landforms and a wetland reserve.

Mei Cun, director of the park management office, suggested that people not climb the mountain after 4:30 p.m. in the summer and 3:30 p.m. in the winter to ensure safety.

A 150-member team has been established to patrol the park 24 hours a day, ensure visitors’ safety and prevent fossils from being damaged, Mei said.
