In Shenzhen, a quiet revolution of kindness is taking place at the foot of Xili Mountain. Here, in a sanctuary built entirely on love and determination, hundreds of dogs and cats who once faced the unthinkable now wag tails, chase toys, and curl up on real beds, waiting for the forever homes they never dared dream of.

That revolution has a name: Karuna, the ancient Sanskrit word for compassion, not as a feeling, but as a verb. To the founders of Karuna Rescue, compassion means rolling up sleeves and doing whatever it takes, no matter how heartbreaking the story or how heavy the odds.

From a Single Summer to a Lifeline of Hope
It all began in the sweltering summer of 2017, when Sachin Patel and Jenny Coulson found themselves intercepting meat trucks in Guangdong Province. One rescued dog became ten, then dozens. Refusing to look away, they transformed their passion into action and opened a proper shelter in Shenzhen. What started as an emergency response has grown into one of southern China’s most trusted havens for survivors of the meat trade, as well as abandoned, abused, and street animals.

Today, Karuna Rescue operates to Western veterinary and welfare standards, rare in a region where resources for animal rescue remain limited. Every dog enjoys an individual pen with a real bed, access to two spacious exercise yards, and even a swimming pool for playtime and rehabilitation. Cats lounge in bright, clean catteries. Routine vet checks, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and loving rehabilitation are simply non-negotiable.

See It. Feel It. Change It.
This is more than a slogan; it’s the daily rhythm at Karuna. Volunteers and staff witness suffering, allow themselves to feel it deeply, and then channel that emotion into life-saving work. Meat-trade survivors arrive terrified and injured; months later, the same dogs leap joyfully into the arms of adoptive families in Shenzhen and around the world.
A Shelter That Runs on Heart (and Your Help)
Karuna Rescue receives no government funding. Every bowl of food, every vaccine, every midnight emergency surgery is made possible by donations and the tireless work of volunteers.
Monthly costs are relentless: rent on the mountain-foot property, salaries for the dedicated local team, veterinary care, medication, facility maintenance, and the inevitable emergencies that come with rescuing the most vulnerable animals.
Yet every contribution, no matter the size, translates directly into wagging tails and second chances.
