My Magical Visit to Shenzhen Bay Culture Square

Today, I finally gave in to my curiosity and headed down to check out Shenzhen’s brand new cultural gem, Shenzhen Bay Culture Square, and oh my goodness, it was even more stunning than I imagined.

My adventure started as I crossed the elegant new bridges that link straight to the buzzing Houhai shopping street. Tall, sleek towers rose around me, pulling me deeper into the complex. Along the way, I fell in love with the beautifully redesigned riverside walkway, trees exploding in full bloom, soft breezes off the bay, and plenty of cozy benches where I could just sit and soak it all in.

Then came the moment I saw the exhibition building itself, and I literally stopped in my tracks. Designed by the incredible Ma Yansong of MAD Architects and brought to life by CR Land, this 188,000 square-meter masterpiece looks like giant river stones playfully scattered across a lush green lawn, or maybe a sleek spaceship that just touched down from another world. The flowing passageways between the different sections curve so naturally, like gentle ripples on water. It’s pure architectural poetry.

Stepping inside felt like entering another dimension, an endless, glowing white space where walls seem to melt away. The exhibitions blew me away: a perfect dance between real, touchable installations and breathtaking multimedia installations that pulse with light, color, and sound. I lost track of time wandering through it all, totally inspired.

I also discovered the Future Design Academy tucked inside, a vibrant space dedicated to sparking new ideas through public courses, creative workshops, and exciting seminars. I’m already bookmarking a few events to come back for.

I left feeling completely enchanted and buzzing with creative energy. Shenzhen Bay Culture Square isn’t just a building; it’s a living celebration of imagination and innovation. And the best part? It’s just a quick 10 minute walk from Houhai metro station, so if you haven’t been yet, drop everything and go, you’ll thank me later.

I run fun and inspiring weekly art classes for both adults and children. If you’d like to learn more about my schedule and join the creative fun, just scan the QR code below.
