Why Is Skincare Getting So High-Tech?

A few years ago, skincare was pretty simple. Cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, maybe a serum if you were feeling ambitious. Today, things are getting a little more high-tech. Red light, microcurrent and skin sensors are finding their way into beauty products, and even the applicator can now do more than simply spread a formula. For a long time, beauty innovation was mainly about what went into the formula. Packaging protected it, made it easy to use and helped it stand out on the shelf. Now, technology is changing that relationship. Instead of reaching for a separate device after applying skincare, some functions can be built directly into the product or applicator. The technology becomes part of the routine itself. But what are these technologies actually doing?

Red light is probably one of the easier ones to understand. 

Certain wavelengths of red and near-infrared light are being studied for their role in skin health and ageing. There is also clinical research behind some of these uses. One controlled study found that red-light treatment increased skin hydration and reduced transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, a common measure of how much water escapes through the skin. Of course, results can vary depending on wavelength, intensity and treatment time. Microcurrent works differently. It uses a very low-level electrical current during application and is often used to create a more toned or refreshed-looking appearance. But perhaps the more interesting change is where these technologies can go. When light or microcurrent is built into an applicator, the same tool can apply skincare while providing another function. It does not necessarily mean adding another gadget or another step to the routine.

Most of us make skincare decisions by looking in the mirror or simply guessing: "My skin feels dry today," or "I seem to be more oily than usual." A sensor can offer a little more information. Depending on the technology, it can measure things such as hydration, oiliness or other surface characteristics. It does not replace a dermatologist, and it cannot tell you everything about your skin. But it can turn "I think my skin needs this” into “This is what my skin is showing me.” As technologies like these become smaller and easier to integrate, packaging and applicators are also taking on a different role. They are no longer just containers or tools for dispensing a formula. They can become part of how a product is applied, how consumers interact with it and, in some cases, how they understand their skin.
