Places of Worship in Shenzhen (Catholic and Protestant)

Although you can find many Christian churches in Hong Kong, they are a bit harder to track down in Shenzhen. However, there are quite a few churches that are “Unregistered” but only a couple of churches which offer Bi-Lingual services.

This article highlights some of the main ones and Sunday mass times are given where possible. It should be noted that all of the main churches have full Christmas Schedules.

St Anthony’s Catholic Church The most popular choice for foreigners is St. Anthony’s Church (also locally referred to as “New Church”). St Anthony’s has an English Mass for Catholics every Sunday at 11:30am. St Anthony’s is located at No. 65, Nonglin Road, Futian District, Shenzhen (深圳市福田区农林路65号) on the west side of Nonglin Lu (between the Chegongmiao and Zhuzilin subway stop near the China Merchants Tower) around 1 kilometer north of Shennan Road.

An easy way of reaching the church is by taking the metro subway train to Che Gong Miao Station. Head for exit “B”. Riding a cab to get to the church should only take around 10 minutes and cost RMB 12.50. For the more adventurous you can take the number 374 bus. Alight at the penultimate stop (the one before the main bus station).

In addition to St. Anthony’s, there is a Chinese parish in Nantou called St. Paul’s. They have Mass every Sunday at 9 am and the service is in Mandarin. The church can be difficult to find, but it is near the Nantou Security Bureau and Zhongshan Park.

English-language services are also offered on the campus of Shekou International School in the Jingshan Villas neighborhood of Shekou. A priest from Hong Kong visits and celebrates mass on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of the month, while a lay-led communion service is offered on the second and fourth Sundays. The time of the services is 3:30 pm.

Nantou Catholic Church Nantou Catholic Church was founded in 1931 and was the first Catholic Church in Shenzhen. An English mass is available from 8.30pm on Sundays.

Nantou Catholic Church is located at No.210, Chaoyang Bei Road, Shenzhen (深圳市南山区朝阳北路210号). To get there, take the bus with numbers 201, 301, 305, 310 and 355. You can also take the metro to Zongshan Park and enter Nantou from the south side.

The Meilin Protestant Church The Meilin Protestant Church has services in Chinese, English and Korean. The church was built in 2003 on the Eastern Section of Meilin Road, Futian district. The Meilin Protestant Church is located at 126 Meilin Road, Futian (福田区梅林路126号) and can be reached by taking the bus with numbers 30,35,201,222,361 (Meilin ercun stop).
