Rest Isn't What You Think It Is: Why Stopping Isn't the Same as Recovering

It's Friday evening and someone asks you a simple question. What do you want for dinner? And you genuinely cannot answer. Not because you don't care, but because your brain has nothing left. You've been making decisions since 7am and this one, this completely inconsequential one, is the one that breaks you.

The obvious answer is, "get some rest." But here's where it gets complicated. Most of us feel like we don't have time for it, and the moments we do carve out, we spend scrolling, half-watching something, or sitting with our phones while our brains stay quietly wound up. We think we're resting, but we're not really. Real rest is anything that lets your brain switch out of effortful, reactive attention and into recovery mode. And that gap between stopping and actually recovering is why so many of us hit Friday evening already running on empty.

Why Your Brain Hits a Wall

Here's something most productivity culture gets completely backwards. Rest is what lets your brain be capable of work again.

Alex Soojung-Kim Pang spent years researching how history's most creative and productive people structured their time. His conclusion: rest and work are partners, and you can't do one well without the other.

The science is more concrete than it sounds. Prolonged cognitive work appears to increase metabolic load in the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and emotional regulation. A 2022 study in Current Biology found this buildup is measurable after a day of demanding mental work, which is part of why thinking hard for hours eventually makes even simple decisions feel exhausting. That Friday dinner question isn't trivial. Your brain is genuinely signaling that it needs something to change.

What it needs is to shift out of directed, effortful attention and into what neuroscientists call the default mode network. When it's active, the brain consolidates memories, makes connections, and does the background processing that focused work depends on. This is how the brain restores itself.

Scrolling on your phone may feel like stopping, but it keeps your brain in "respond" mode. So does half-watching something with your phone in your hand. These activities keep your attention reactive even when they feel passive.

The Stressor Is Gone. The Stress Isn't.

Here's the part that changed how I think about rest entirely.

Psychologists Emily and Amelia Nagoski, in their book Burnout, make a distinction that sounds simple but is genuinely useful: dealing with the thing that's stressing you out and dealing with the stress itself are two completely separate processes. Most of us are only ever doing the first one.

Think about a typical day. You handle the difficult email. You get the kids to school. You navigate the work problem, the logistics, the thing that needed sorting out. The stressor is managed. But your nervous system, which activated a stress response the moment each of those things landed, is still waiting for a signal that it's safe to stand down. It doesn't automatically get one just because the situation resolved.

This is why you can sit down at the end of the day with nothing urgent left to do and still feel wound up. The to-do list is quieter, but your body hasn't gotten the memo.

Research by organizational psychologist Sabine Sonnentag shows that people who mentally detach from work during off-hours report better mood, lower fatigue, and fewer symptoms of strain, without being any less engaged or productive during working hours. The problem is not about how much you care about your work. It's never being able to put it down.

For expats, this runs even deeper. Research on acculturative stress confirms that living somewhere that doesn't match your defaults keeps your nervous system lightly activated in ways you often don't notice until you stop. You're carrying the daily cost of operating in a second language, navigating unfamiliar systems, and maintaining relationships across time zones. Even basic errands, like a Meituan order or a hospital appointment, can demand more cognitive effort than you realize.

The Nagoskis call what's needed, “completing the stress cycle”. And the important thing, especially if you're someone who feels like you can't rest until the problem is fixed, is that you don't have to fix anything first. The cycle completes through the body, not through resolution. Movement, connection, laughter, a genuine cry are the mechanisms your nervous system uses to shift out of stress and back into baseline.

Three Kinds of Rest That Work

This part is actually more forgiving than most people expect, which is good news if your life doesn't have a huge margin for free time.

Move

Physical activity is the single most efficient way to complete the stress response cycle, according to the Nagoskis. And research on cortisol, the body's primary stress hormone, consistently shows that moderate-intensity movement is what reduces chronic stress reactivity over time. A walk. Twenty minutes on a bike. A quick yoga flow. Movement that raises your heart rate without pushing you to your limit. Your body doesn't distinguish between a lion and a difficult client meeting. It just needs to know the threat has passed, and moderate movement is one of the clearest signals it understands.

Walking keeps showing up in unexpected places in this research. A Stanford study found that walking, even on a treadmill facing a blank wall, meaningfully increased creative thinking during and after the walk. Pang documents this extensively, pointing out that some of history's most productive thinkers built long daily walks into their routines as part of their work, not a break from it. Darwin did it. So did Beethoven, Dickens, and Nietzsche. For all of them, the walk was where the thinking happened.

Connect

Brief, genuine connection signals safety to your nervous system in a way that sitting alone with your phone cannot. The Nagoskis cite research suggesting that even brief physical affection, when it's welcome, can lower physiological arousal and improve mood. A conversation that makes you laugh in a way you didn't see coming does the same thing.

For expats specifically, sometimes that signal is sensory and cultural. A familiar song from home, cooking something that takes you back, a voice call with someone who knew you before you got here. These aren't homesickness. They're recovery.

Unstructured Time

The third kind is the one most people resist because it looks like doing nothing. Deliberate mind-wandering, unstructured time with no directed input, is when the default mode network does its actual work. Not a podcast. Not news. Ten or fifteen minutes where you let your brain go where it goes. Churchill made his afternoon nap an inflexible rule even during the war. Murakami naps for 30 minutes after lunch every day. These aren't the quirks of people with too much time. They're people who understood that the brain needs unstructured time to consolidate what it's taken in and prepare for what's next.

A 2022 meta-analysis found that short, intentional pauses meaningfully improve wellbeing and reduce fatigue. The difference is whether it’s intentional. A break that keeps your attention directed, reactive, or stimulated doesn't register as recovery, regardless of how passive it feels.

You probably already have pockets of time in your day that could do this work. The question is whether you're spending them in ways that restore you.

A Final Thought

Rest is not a reward for finishing everything. If you're waiting for that moment, it won't come, because for most people living full lives in a foreign country, there is no finish line on any given day. There's just the next thing.

What there is, though, are small windows. The 20 minutes after drop-off. The lunch break you usually work through. The 15 minutes before the kids are up. Your brain works more like a muscle than a machine, and it performs better when you give it the right kind of recovery, and worse, noticeably worse, when you don't. The cognitive fog, the short fuse, the inability to make a simple decision at the end of a long day, these aren't character flaws. They're what a depleted brain looks like.

The good news is that recovery has a minimum effective dose, and it's smaller than most people think. A walk. A real hug. Twenty minutes of movement. Fifteen minutes where you don't direct your attention at anything. None of these require a free afternoon. They just require knowing that they count.

So the question worth sitting with right now, is this: what's one 20-minute block you could spend in a way that restores you today?
