Dream Travel Therapy's Epic Multi-Media Rock Opera: Call for Performers and Artists

A groundbreaking multi-media rock opera organized by Dream Travel Therapy, and coordinated by New York playwright Li Bai, a multiple award-winning director from north China, and a Harvard University theater group director, will launch auditions and rehearsals in Shenzhen at the Futian Civic Center from now until September 30. This international production, bridging Shenzhen with cities in Europe and America, seeks directors, singers, musicians (any instrument), actors, rappers, shadow puppeteers, dancers, videographers, artists, models, body paint artists, and enthusiastic volunteers. No experience is required—just passion. The show, inspired by Tommy, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Pink Floyd’s The Wall, aims to tear down walls through a fusion of rock, blues, reggae, funk, jazz, opera, rap, and world music, weaving ancient Chinese wisdom into a modern narrative.

The story follows a wealthy but unfulfilled man who builds a fearsome robot, becomes king of the world under a vampire’s influence, and remains unhappy until a dream fairy and a wise monk inspire him to program ancient wisdom into the robot, leading to a joyful resolution. The interactive performance invites audience participation: painting over a projected Mona Lisa for collective art, eating mint candy simultaneously for a shared sensory experience, dressing as vampires or fairies, stepping over a symbolic vampire to confront mortality, and joining a climactic drum circle. Additional elements include rearranged lyrics symbolizing impermanence, a song based on an audience member’s dream, and projections of Einstein and Nietzsche.

Profits will be shared equally among participants. Singers and rappers need English proficiency, but all are welcome to contribute.
