End of an Era: The Legendary Snake Pit's Closure

For 37 years the Snake Pit has stood as a beacon of camaraderie, resilience, and shared histories. Based in SeaWorld in Shekou, Shenzhen it emerged as the first established bar for expatriates in China. The Snake Pit was born from a need to provide respite to hardy engineers working on China’s first multi-national oil drilling projects, and evolved into a cherished social and cultural hub.

It was more than just a place to eat, drink, and let loose; it was a sanctuary for these trailblazing engineers returning onshore after relentless days out at sea in the mid-80s. Over the years it cultivated a vibrant and diverse community, fostering ties that stretched from Texas and Scotland to Scandinavia. Characters as colourful as “Steal” George, who would leave his glass eye on the bar while he went to the bathroom, were part of the rich tapestry of the Snake Pit’s legacy.

Known as both The Snake Pit and The Shekou Sports and Social Club, the establishment evolved to accommodate its growing community. It morphed into a family-orientated space that hosted organizations and charity events, showcasing the bar’s versatility and commitment to inclusivity. With a membership of once over 5,000 from 52 different countries, the Snake Pit stood as a testament to the diverse, united, and spirited community it served.

However, as the curtains of July draw close, we regretfully announce that the Snake Pit, which has weathered so much change and growth, has closed its doors. But the spirit of the Snake Pit, its stories, its community, and its legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who graced its doors.

To honor this cherished legacy, George & Dragon has collected some of the Snake Pit’s precious memorabilia. Moreover, it will acknowledge the Snake Pit membership cards, specifically those of which Sergei, the former owner, has provided credit information for.
