Shenzhen's Metro Network Expansion: Five New Line Sections Launching This Year

City officials have confirmed that Shenzhen is set to unveil five new sections of its Metro lines this year, as per an announcement made during a recent radio broadcast.

Shenzhen Metro has been making impressive strides, with its daily passenger flow intensity hitting 14,000 people per kilometer in the first five months of this year - the highest in the country, as pointed out by Zheng Tiejun, the Vice Director of the city’s Development and Reform Commission.

In another significant achievement on March 8, the city’s rail transit network clocked a record-breaking passenger volume of over 10 million in a single day across all 17 operating lines.

Set to commence operations by year-end are five new sections spanning a total of 28 kilometers across various districts. These include the Shuanglong to Pingdi section on Line 3 in Longgang District, the Xili Lake to Shenzhen University section of Line 7 in Nanshan District, a section of Line 13’s Phase I in Nanshan District, the Gangxiabei to Huaqiang South section of Line 11 in Futian District, and the Shenzhen Waterlands Resort to Songgang section of Line 12 in Bao’an District. Among these, four are extensions to existing lines, while the new Line 13 signifies a fresh addition.

Phase I of Line 13, which commences at the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint and ends 22.4 kilometers later at Shangwu Station in Bao’an District, cuts through prime locations such as the Houhai CBD, the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park, the Xili high-speed railway hub, and the Liuxiandong Headquarters Base. The stretch between the Shenzhen Bay Checkpoint and the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park is set to open its doors this year.

At present, Shenzhen boasts 16 functioning Metro lines spanning a total distance of 567 kilometers, with another 16 lines currently under construction. The ambitious Phase V Metro project, which commands an investment of 195.2 billion yuan (US$27 billion) and represents the most extensive infrastructure development in Shenzhen, is projected to be fully operational by 2028. This colossal project comprises 11 lines covering 185.6 kilometers.

Once this major undertaking concludes, Shenzhen anticipates a total of 840 operational kilometers of Metro lines.

As per the city’s forward-looking plan, by 2035, Shenzhen aims to construct a comprehensive transportation network that includes over 1,000 kilometers of Metro lines, in excess of 1,000 kilometers of light rails and intercity railways, coupled with over 1,000 kilometers of expressways.
