UPDATE: 3pm Wednesday Sept 14th. The Hong Kong Observatory today announced that “Super Typhoon Meranti was estimated to be about 570 kilometres east of Hong Kong (near 22.6 degrees north 119.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards the coast of Fujian…. according to the present forecast track of Meranti, winds generally over Hong Kong today are not expected to strengthen significantly and the chance of issuing the Strong Wind Signal No.3 today is not high. Meranti is expected to be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning, skirting around 400km to the east of the territory. There will be occasionally strong winds over offshore waters and on high ground tonight and tomorrow morning.”
UPDATE: At 2pm Tuesday Sept 13th, the Hong Kong Observatory forecasts that Mercanti is expected to reach Super Typhoon status with up to 200 km/h maximum sustained winds by sometime tomorrow. This is stronger than typhoon Nida which hit Shekou pretty hard early last month.
