From Groove to Hard Bop
With the 60s coming to an end, the revolutionary spirit of the era was so pervasive that it forced artists, especially jazz players, to have more to say in music.
Lee Morgan, for instance, left a main legacy in jazz history with the invention of Hard Pop. It was the reaction to cool jazz in the 1950s: Hard Pop musicians thought that jazz had become too classical, so they tried to bring blues, gospel, and other African-centric genres back into their music.
The start of Morgan’s career was impressive. The Philadelphian was only 17 when Dizzy Gillespie hired him to join his Big Bebop band. At the age of 19, he was invited by John Coltrane to play on the album Blues Train, a jewel in Coltrane’s stunning collection of work. At the age of 20, Morgan was invited to join the Jazz Messengers of Art Blakey, where Hard Pop hatched.
