Upcoming Dragon Boat Racing Activities in Shenzhen

AS the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, several dragon boat races have been taking place around the city. As an integral part of the traditional festival that dates back to ancient China, the boat races will provide a unique opportunity for locals to experience the cultural heritage of the festival and the atmosphere is sure to be filled with energy, excitement and celebration.

Futian District

Locals will enjoy 12 teams paddling their dragon boats on Xinzhou River against the backdrop of urban buildings in the city center. During the 2023 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament, a yingge dance parade, hip-hop dancers, rappers and cheerleaders will liven up the competition. You can also visit a market to buy handicrafts or zongzi and play traditional Chinese games.

Nanshan District

Enjoy a dragon boat race by the Dasha River and see the beautiful view along the 13.7 km-long Dasha River ecological Corridor.

Venue: Dasha River, intersection of Binhai Boulevard and Shahe Road West, Nanshan District (南山区大沙河,滨海大道和沙河西路交界处)

Dapeng New Area

Watching a dragon boat race on the sea! The 2023 First Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Maritime Dragon Boat Race (Nan’ao, Shenzhen) will start tomorrow off the sea in Yueliang Bay, Nan’ao Subdistirct, Dapeng New Area. The boat race is the only maritime dragon boat race in Shenzhen.

Apart from the exciting boat races, visitors can also enjoy performances featuring intangible cultural heritages, such as qilin dances and saltwater songs, and taste traditional Nan’ao delicacies, including sea urchin zongzi, rice noodles and yuannong cakes made of glutinous rice flour.

Longhua District

Sixty-eight teams will compete in three categories on Guanlan River. The open category has invited 16 professional teams from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Poland and the Czech Republic; the community category includes staff from local community work stations; and the organization category has 52 teams composed of staff from local government-affiliated institutions, organizations, enterprises and subdistrict offices.

Preliminary, semi-finals: 9 a.m.-noon, 2:30-5 p.m., June 19

Finals: 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m., June 21
