Dear Shenzhen-er,
Typhoon Talim sends his greetings entering this week. Hopefully by the time you're reading this we're on the tail end of the storm. The eye of the storm is predicted to graze the 300km mark southwest from our city center at around 7pm today. Here's a short piece covering the storm. Setting aside the temporary cooling effects we're enjoying thanks to the storm - the sale of cooling devices and services related to cooling down during the hottest days of the year (known as the Sanfu Days locally) has shot up recently. Finally if you're feeling like absorbing some local ancient culture you can consider viewing the free "Oriental Smile" exhibit in Nanshan Museum - it's open through the end of October.
The Shenzhen Cartoon and Animation Festival (running the 19th to the 23rd) promises to be an interesting event if you fancy those things. WHILE viewers in the West have for centuries been intrigued by the mysterious smile of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” local visitors now have the opportunity to meet equally fascinating smiling sculptures from the magnificent Majishan Grottoes at the “Maijishan Grottoes: The Oriental Smile” exhibition at the Nanshan Museum. The exhibition is free to the public and will run through Oct. 29.

SINCE the beginning of the Chinese dog days July 11, which are also known as the Sanfu days that mark summer’s hottest spells, it seems like the city is steaming hot.
